Today, Monday May 14, 2018 Israel celebrates 70 years of Independence!
Seventy has a sacred meaning in the Bible that is made up of the factors of two perfect numbers, seven, ‘the most beloved of numbers in Judaism’ according to the Midrash, it represents completion, and ten representing fulfillment of God’s law. There are said to be at least 70 parables of Jesus. Seventy disciples were sent on the first missionary journey.
70 elders were appointed by Moses. After reading the covenant God gave him to read to the people, Moses took 70 elders, along with Aaron and his sons, up Mount Sinai to have a special meal with God himself (Exodus 24:9 – 11)
Israel in Egypt had its beginnings with Joseph rising in power in Pharaoh’s court. When Jacob moved his entire household into the land a total of 70 Israelites started a nation within another nation that would grow to more than two million by the Exodus.
In the book of Daniel, the fulfillment of his prophecies were to be sealed until there were 70 sevens (490 years) after the completion of the exile in Babylon ends and the Messiah comes again.
l had a sense of an immediate application, though, when reading Jeremiah 29:10, which we fankly I have not included along with the oft-quoted verse 11: For I know the plans that I have for you, says the Lord, for good and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.
Jeremiah 29:10 “For thus says the Lord, ‘When seventy years have been completed for Babylon, I will visit you and fulfill My good word to you, to bring you back to this place. Ancient Israel did spend exactly 70 years in captivity as was prophesied. Yet God is eternal and therefore so is His word. It has past, present and future implications and applications.
In 1948, the same year that Israel became a nation, what became known as the Latter Rain movement was sparked in part by a revival in North Battleford, Saskatchewan. There has been a national call for the church to return to North Battleford this coming November to pray for God to make Himself known again in a powerful way to this generation. Leaders from different streams of Christianity have said that they will attend. Do I need to re-iterate that seventy years will have been completed? Might we call out for God to fulfill Jeremiah 29:10 for us in this day and age?
I invite you to listen to this musical version of Habakkuk 3:2 Mercy Me by Brian Doerksen and ask God to visit Canada again.
