Even these may forget

A mother carries a child in her womb for nine months but carries that child in her heart forever.

It is a saying, one I quoted on my Facebook page today in honour of Mothers’ Day.

It resonates. As a mother, I know this personally, that there is not a way that I would forget her, the one I named Angela, the angel of my body, the child of my heart.

There are also some verses in Isaiah 49 that speak of motherhood

The Lord called Me from the womb; From the body of My mother He named Me.

14 But Zion said, “The Lord has forsaken me, and the Lord has forgotten me.”
15 “Can a woman forget her nursing child
And have no compassion on the son of her womb?
Even these may forget, but I will not forget you.

Implied in those verses is that a mother COULD NOT forget her child but….IF

IF IT WERE POSSIBLE for such a thing to happen

STILL IT WOULD NOT BE POSSIBLE FOR GOD TO FORGET YOU.

These verses say that a mothers’ love is not as great as the love of God.

I have heard God speak His own heart as a mother would and it is there for all to read in

Luke 13:34 O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, just as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you would not have it!

Can you hear the longing in that phrase, ” How often I wanted to gather your children”?

A mother is frequently referred to as the heart of the home. She is the one who always wants her kids to be together, to come home, if at no other time at least on holidays. The mothers’ heart is and should be celebrated in our culture. Is God’s heart understood and celebrated? These verses tell us that Gods’ love is stronger than that of a mother.

A mother will love her child just because he is her own. If her love fails in any way, should it fall short by seeming to be conditional, the love of God resides in His heart as Creator and mother is only a fraction of an image of that greater Love.

Mothers’ Day can be difficult for so many. You may have lost your mother, or lost a child. Your relationship may be estranged. You may have been unable to conceive. No matter the circumstance of your family today, you are not forgotten by God.
